The College of Virginia Athletics Director Carla Williams introduced Monday the varsity will barely alter its packages’ logos over connections to slavery.
The Virginia logo options a big grey V with an orange define with two sabers beneath. On the time the logo was unveiled, the grips of the sabers have been supposed to mimic “the design of the serpentine walls found on the Grounds,” in accordance to the varsity.

“After the release of our new logos on April 24, I was made aware of the negative connotation between the serpentine walls and slavery,” Williams stated in a news release. “I used to be not beforehand conscious of the historic perspective indicating the unique 8-foot-high partitions have been constructed to masks the establishment of slavery and enslaved laborers from public view.
“Over the previous couple of weeks, I’ve labored to higher educate myself and that schooling will proceed.

“There was no intent to cause harm, but we did, and for that I apologize to those who bear the pain of slavery in our history. As such, we have redesigned the logos to remove that detail. All other aspects of the logos will remain the same.”
The college’s unique serpentine partitions have been constructed within the 1820s and have been later eliminated. The present partitions have been constructed within the 1950s with a shorter peak and wider berth, the varsity stated.
